Color Block Crochet Blanket - Free Crochet Pattern

Perfect for baby, toddler, child, and adult! This pattern is easy, beginner friendly, provides loads of texture and warmth, plus can be made in any size desired!

I made this blanket roughly 4 years ago - talk about throw back for me! My son was 3 years old and in preschool where they took afternoon naps (those lucky ducks!) so I made him this blanket to snuggle under during those much needed naps.

He's still able to snuggle under this blanket with his books since I made it extra long for him! I don't know about you, but I love making sure every inch is covered. :)

When I was going through all of my crochet blankets now that the weather is starting to turn (and then going back to hot and humid.. when will the cool weather stick?) and decided that this would be a good one to put up on the blog!

It's textured, warm, easy to make, fairly quick, and perfect to make for any size! Those are all good qualities for a blanket if you ask me.

The stitch used is called the waffle stitch, which provides a texture as well as thickness to make this the perfect blanket to snuggle under during the fall and winter seasons. And the good news is, it's easy! If you know how to double crochet, you know how to make this blanket.

Like I said earlier in this post, it's very easy to make this in any size you'd like. To make it wider, you will just need to add on to the beginning chain in multiples of two. To make it longer, simply keep adding rows until you think it's long enough!

• Yarn substitution suggested (if you don't want to use Red Heart Super Saver) is I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby. Other worsted weight yarns are thinner compared to the Red Heart. (See next bullet point)
• If you are using a 'thinner' worsted weight yarn as a substitute, you will want to use a smaller hook size (probably an H/5.00mm). This will result in a small square size so to counter the smaller size, add a row to your granny square pattern. This is easily done by repeating the last row of the granny square.

Halloween Ghost Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Dimensions: Approx. 6.5" square

Round 1: Magic ring, Ch 2, 10dc into magic ring, join to first dc

Round 2: Ch 2, 2dc into each st around, join to first dc 

Round 3: Ch 2, *dc, hdc into next 2 st, dc, [2dc, ch 2, 2dc] all in one st, repeat from * , join to first dc (8 st per side)

Round 4: Ch 2, *dc until you get to the ch 2 space from previous row, [2dc, ch 2, 2dc] all in ch 2 space, repeat from * , dc in next 2 spaces until you get to the beginning of the round, join to first dc (12 st per side)

Bobbles and Stripes Granny Square Blanket - Free, Easy Crochet Pattern

One of my favorite things about granny squares is that you don't have to be limited to basic stitches. For this granny square pattern, I used both a bobble stitch and double crochet to make a gorgeous texture! Plus I used multiple colors for a fun look! 

When LoveCrochet graciously gave me some of a new line of yarns they had out, I immediately knew it would be perfect for a blanket!

The new line of yarn is called Main Street Yarns and is currently exclusively on their LoveCrochet website. You can check out all the colors they have here.

This yarn is 100%acrylic, but if you didn't know before you felt it, you may have thought differently! This yarn is so super squishy soft and I still gush over it when I talk about it.

The only way I know how to describe feeling the skein of yarn is it feels like you're squishing a sheep's wool! It's that soft!

It also worked up beautifully and it's what every acrylic worsted weight yarn should be! Soft, a bit shiny (not too much), squishy, and feels wonderful to work with.

Since the yarn was so squishy and I knew it would give a fantastic drape, I added in some bobbles for texture that I knew wouldn't end up being stiff.

The bobbles slow you down a bit after doing a row of double crochets, but totally worth it! They're easy to make and gives such a gorgeous pop of detail to the blanket. I'm in love!

Even my new pup loves the finished blanket. He basically has claimed it as his own and that's okay, because I don't have any babies for the baby sized blanket I made!

It's no secret that I love granny squares. I think I spent half of my blogging career making them! Especially with my themed afghans that I love so much.

Llama and Cactus Granny Square Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern

This cute llama and cactus blanket took me much longer than I anticipated to finish, but I'm thrilled that it's complete! And it's one of my new favorites!

I first made the cactus and I had such a great response from everyone! I wasn't 100% sure where I was headed with the blanket, but when I added llamas it was definitely going in the right direction!

Everyone really loved the llamas - and for good reason! He's simple yet detailed (which is my typical MO) and the little rugs on the backs are a fun way to play with color!

Since I was making a small baby sized blanket, I didn't want to put too many different appliques on it like I did my Ocean Afghan because I really wanted the llamas to be the star of the afghan.

Once I had the llama and cactus theme going on, I wanted to make at least one more applique to tie it all together. I'm not sure why it was a lot harder than one may think to pick a third and final applique to complete the blanket.

After trying out a sun, sombrero, and played with a few other ideas in my head, I decided on a simple flower.

I envisioned the llama and cactus themes that you see everywhere and on everything in stores (it's such a popular theme these days!), so what better than a simple pretty flower.

I really tried to make a cohesive color theme, but I really used a little bit of everything when it came to details! Overall, the blanket gives such a fun and festive theme - so perfect for spring and summer!

I know this blanket is just a tad bit on the girly spectrum, but I think switching out the pink squares for a pretty blue would be so cute for a baby boy blanket!

Llama applique and granny square

Materials for granny squares (baby blanket size)

Impeccable Loops and Threads in White (2 skeins), Arbor Rose (1 skein), and Soft Fern (1 skein)

I made 15 white squares, 6 pink, 9 green, 6 llamas, 5 cacti, and 4 flowers. You can see the layout in the very first photo of how I arranged my squares.

Sew all the appliques onto white squares.

I joined them all together using this joining method.

Once all squares are together, I made a simple border around with J/6.00mm hook and Arbor Rose:

Round 1: Attach yarn to corner, ch 1, sc evenly around the border, making 3 sc in each corner, join to first sc
Round 2: Ch 1, *(sc, ch 3, sc) all in next st, sk 1, repeat from*

Fasten off and weave in any and all ends

Mint to Be Crochet Afghan Free Pattern

Over the last month, I've made the best easy crochet afghan with Lion Brand's Scarfie Yarn.  I'm so in love with this "Mint To Be" afghan - it's a perfect throw for my sofa and the colors are so pretty! The Scarfie yarn I chose to use was definitely 'mint to be' made into an afghan. ;)

Lion Brand was generous enough to send me Scarfie yarn to complete this crocheted afghan.  I chose the color way 'Mint Silver' because I couldn't pass up some color mixed with a pretty neutral! The color transitions are very smooth and the result is a pretty striped effect.

When designing this blanket, I knew I wanted to create something that was easy to make.  I also wanted to crochet something that I wouldn't get bored of in the middle of making. Making larger afghans can become tedious and get set to the side and forgotten about. (Or maybe that's just me!)

With the flawless color changes in the Scarfie yarn, it kept me motivated to keep crocheting to see the final outcome and color transitions! I stuck to basic stitches and chose to use the 'spider stitch'. To create a nice drape to the afghan, I used a larger than recommended hook size so it would be light and cozy.

I'm not sure if it was the Scarfie yarn, my Clover Amour hook, or a combination of both - but this afghan was heaven to make! The yarn was so soft and the Clover Amour hooks glide so effortlessly, it was such a joy to make! I think those were big factors as well in motivating me to finish this blanket without putting it aside.

Using small stitches can become time consuming, but with the larger weight of this yarn and a larger hook size, I was able to crochet about half a skein (sometimes more) each night until this blanket was complete. In total, it only took a little less than two weeks to complete this blanket - time well spent and half way through I got to use it while crocheting. :)

The result of the blanket is a breath of fresh air. The colors are so pretty and the stitch compliments the yarn so nicely. My favorite thing about it is how light and airy, snuggly, and warm it is! This was intended to be a throw for our sofa, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't take ownership of it myself. (As I'm typing, I have it wrapped around me with a cup of something hot close by!)

Notes: 

• This afghan can be made larger or smaller by adding or reducing the beginning number of chains, just make sure you have an odd number.
• Chain 2 in the beginning of each row will count as a stitch.

Tips:

• The spider stitch may be difficult when working into the chain 1 spaces (they are hard to see), to make it easier, just know that the chain two spaces are after every two stitches.
• The last stitch in the row may become difficult to find. Check out my tip here on getting even rows without having to count your stitches.

Dimensions: 45" x 64"

Abbreviations (US terms)

Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, st = stitch(es)

Pattern:

Row 1: Chain 167, (sc, ch 1, sc) into the 2nd ch from the hook, *skip 1 st, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next st, repeat from * across, sc into last st, turn
Row 2: Ch 2, *(sc, ch 1, sc) into ch 1 space from previous row, repeat from * , sc into last st, turn
Repeat Row 2 until you afghan is 64" long or desired height.

Spring Granny Afghan Crochet Along

In this post you will find the weekly instructions/layout for this Spring Afghan crochet along! Find all the information and materials list here.

Because the project consists of the same granny square, I will be releasing the layout in parts weekly! Each week we will be making 10 squares and joining them as you go (or which ever method of joining you prefer!) After 9 weeks, we will have an afghan for spring! (10 squares x 9 weeks = 90 squares!)

Important Notes

READ THIS BEFORE YOU START!

There are five different colored flowers for this afghan, and I know not everyone will be using the same colors as I chose so I will be referring to these colors as color A, B, C, D, and E. Make note of what color you are using for each letter so you don't forget!

Following the layout I assigned my yarn colors as follows: A = sunshine, B = lavender, C = sage, D = lavender blue, E = soft pink. (This is just for reference if you want to go by exactly how I made my afghan).

If you are new to using the join as you go method, please watch the video on joining before you complete your squares if you've never used this method before! We will literally join as we go. After making one square, you will start joining the second square before completing (if that's confusing - you'll understand once you watch the instructions!)

Tips

Weave in as you go! (Cliche, I know.) Joining as you go method works smoothly and nicely when you don't have pesky ends to work around. Try to weave in after each join.

When weaving in the tail from the magic ring, make a knot (or two) around a stitch to make it secure. Magic rings are known for coming undone after much use/washing.

If you are using Caron Simply Soft, they have nice center pulls. You can keep the yarn labels on and mark your colors A, B, C, D, E. This will help you when referring to the layout.

Granny Filet Square Afghan Crochet Pattern

Isn't this just the most simple yet perfectly detailed blanket?! I love love love blankets made out of one large granny square, so I made one with a little twist.

For this afghan, I created a large solid granny square with rows of filet to keep it a bit breezy. I love the little detail of the little blocks. I think it makes it look very pretty and delicate.

When I first started this project, I made the little filet squares between only two solid rows but I found that too "hole-y" for my taste. However, that may be right up your alley if you're looking for a very light afghan!

Once you get going on this project, it's a very easy and mindless project that you can do while relaxing and/or watching one of your favorite shows. I worked on this project intermittently between other projects. It was very much my go to project when I wanted to do some mindless stitching.

The best thing about this afghan is that you can make it as large or as small as you'd like. The pattern is a five row repeat and once you get past the first few repeats, you won't need to look at the pattern anymore.

I found that using just two of the regular Caron cakes, it made a nice sized baby blanket. I had 3 Caron cakes in the Blueberry Kiwi  color that is now discontinued, so I used all 3 to make a good sized blanket for my 6 year old son.

When using Caron cakes, the color can change mid-round which may not be favorable but I was okay with that. If do not like your color running together mid-round, I have seen some projects where you cut and attach as needed to make your color changes a little more structured.

Fair warning here - you will have to block your finished project! The larger you make the square, the more it will tend to curl up on the edges and look a bit uneven.

I was told this is the nature of very large squares and although I tried changing up my stitch counts and used different yarns - the verdict was I had to block the project. So keep that in mind!

I know many are not able to use the Caron Cakes because of the wool content in it. However, the line of Caron cakes has expanded and they have included a "Caron Big Cakes".

The Caron Big Cakes are 100% acrylic and have around 600 yards of yarn in just one cake! To me, that sounds like the perfect yarn to make this project!

Chain 3 in the beginning of the rounds count as a stitch, when making the next stitch be sure to crochet into the next space and not the same space as the Chain 3.

“Corner” is referring to the chain 2 spaces in each corner of the square.

You may use any type of yarn, just make sure to adjust hook size as needed.

You will need to block your project after completion.

Blanket shown was made with 3 Caron cakes and came out to be approximately 47” x 47” once blocked.

*Count your stitches, it may be easy to miss stitches when making a solid granny square especially if you crochet tightly*

Round 2: Ch 3, *DC in each stitch across until you get to the corner, (2DC, Ch 2, 2DC) all in corner, repeat from * , join to beginning ch 3

Round 3-4: Repeat Round 2

Round 5: Chain 4, skip one stitch, DC, *Ch 1, skip one stitch, DC until you get to the corner, (Ch 1, DC, Ch 2, DC, Ch 1) all in corner.
Start next side by working DC into next stitch and then repeat from *
 until you get back to beginning of round, join to the 3rd space up from the beginning chain

Round 6: Ch 3, *DC in each chain space and DC across until you get to corner, (2DC, Ch 2, 2DC) all in corner, repeat from *
DC until you get back to beginning of round, join to 3rd space up from the beginning chain

Repeat Rounds 2-6 until desired size of blanket is acquired.

 I'm so happy to have a group of people join in on the fun of making this crochet Christmas blanket! I hope this brings a lot of people together all over the world - to encourage, support, and just to have fun! If you'd like, you can join the facebook group here.

The group is a place to share your progress on your Christmas blankets and ask crochet questions about the CAL, but it is still a general group for yarn friends to chat about yarny things!

Listed below is the timeline of this CAL (crochet along) for the Christmas blanket. As you can see, it will span into late October. That is 9 weeks of fun, and you will have the afghan finished by the time December rolls around.

There is also an option to purchase the pattern for the Christmas Granny Square Blanket. If you'd like to purchase the complete blanket pattern you may do so here on Ravelry. 

This PDF file has everything you need to complete this crochet Christmas blanket. You may want to purchase this file in order to print out the patterns to have on hand and/or to work at your own pace. The file will include the crochet along time line as well!
