Velvet Beanie - Free Crochet Hat Pattern

GRAB THE AD-FREE PDF FOR THE VELVET CROCHET BEANIE HERE.

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CROCHET PATTERN.

Are you feeling the velvet craze? I grew up in the 90's and I remember wearing velvet dresses especially during holidays and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't wear them now!

Velvet Yarn

When I saw the velvet yarns hit the stores, I couldn't resist. So many dark beautiful shades and also pretty light neutrals. In my opinion, it is a good price too! At my Michael's store (US), it is about $10 a skein (but you can always use that wonderful 50% coupon) and each skein comes with 315 yards of the velvety goodness!

I've been so in love with the Bernat Velvet yarn. I've already made a circle pillow and it's so squishy and soft! You can find the free pattern for that here.

If you haven't tried the velvet yarn yet, I highly recommend it! I want to make all the things with this yarn because it's just so plushy and comfy! I bought several skeins to make a blanket but decided to make smaller projects first just so I can have the satisfaction of using the finished items ASAP. :)

I can't wait to make more projects with this yarn. I'm currently having a cardigan sweater being tested using the velvet yarn and it will be released mid-November! Be sure to subscribe to my email so you don't miss out.

Crochet Beanie

Since the velvet yarn is so so soft and wonderful to work with and drapes like a dream, I thought a crochet beanie would be fun since it drapes so effortlessly and it's always nice to have something soft to wear on your head while keeping you warm.

I'm really happy with the outcome! The stitch definition isn't great with this yarn so I used the waffle stitch that uses front post double crochets paired with double crochets to create a nice texture that stands out against this smooth yarn.

I used a really pretty soft pink color. I don't usually gravitate towards warm tones, but this blushy pink was so pretty I couldn't pass it up! It will be a fun hat to wear to compliment by olive green winter jacket.

I've also crocheted another sample of this beanie with some clearance yarn I got at Hobby Lobby months ago when they were clearancing out some of their yarns. I had to adjust the size since the yarn was a weight 5 and thinner than the velvet yarn, but it was very easy to do! When making the brim, you just need to have the number of rows divisible by three. I will have those instructions in the pattern notes!

If using different yarns, I suggest sticking with weight 5 and 6. With the easy adjustments, you can not only use different yarns but you can also make different sizes! You will just need to know the head circumference of what size you would like to make and make the brim that length while also keeping in mind that the number of rows needs to be divisible by three. My blogger friend, Katie, from Salty Pearl Crochet has a great resource for different hat sizes if you need it!

I also added a pom pom on top because I love the the look of faux fur pom poms! I think they add a nice finishing touch, but of course you can opt out of the pom if you would rather go without it!

It's hard to see in the photos above because it blends in so well with the white wall behind me, but you can see it much clearer here in this photo I got with my newest puppy, Penny! She is a cockapoo, just like her brother Milo who we got earlier this year. You may remember seeing him in older blog posts of the crochet basket and doggy bowl patterns.

Velvet Crochet Beanie Free Pattern

Materials
Bernat Velvet yarn
J/6.00mm hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Pom pom (optional)

Pattern Notes

Beginning chain 3 when making the main portion of the hat DOES count as a stitch.

Beginning chain 1 when making the brim DOES NOT count as a stitch.

To adjust for sizing, decrease or increase number of rows for brim. The number of rows need to be a multiple of 3. I suggest you also make the number of rows for the brim 1-2 inches smaller than head circumference for a nice, snug fit. When decreasing/increasing size, you may also need to decrease/increase number of rows for the main hat portion of the pattern.

We will be turning our work after each round worked in the main hat section. This is not always common, but necessary in this pattern to create the waffle pattern.

Abbreviations (US terms)
Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, fpdc = front post double crochet, st = stitch

Gauge: 4" x 4" ~ 10 st x 7 rows using waffle stitch (main hat pattern)

Pattern

Brim

Row 1: Ch 10, sc in front loop only across, turn (9)
Row 2-45: Ch 1, sc in front loop only across, turn (9)

Slip stitch to first row, flip inside out so the slip stitch seam is facing inwards. Do not fasten off.

Main Hat

Row 1: Ch 1, dc evenly on the side of the brim (1 double crochet on each side of single crochet row)(45)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as st), *dc in next 2 st, fpdc, repeat from * around, join to ch 3, TURN
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as st), *dc, fpdc in next 2 st, repeat from * around, join to ch 3, TURN
Repeat rows 2-3 until you have 12 rows total of the main hat.
Fasten off and leave tail for cinching.

Using tapestry needle, weave yarn tail in and out of top stitches and cinch tightly.

Attach pom pom as desired.

I have also found another method that you may enjoy doing that cinch up the top of your beanie. This tutorial by Stitch and Hustle is very easy and a great way to create that perfect closing for the top of you crochet beanie! Find the tutorial here(video included).

Chunky Crochet Beanie with Pom Pom - Free Crochet Hat Pattern

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CHUNKY CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN.

It's officially beanie season here and I love it! I just love a nice chunky, crochet hat in a neutral color that can match anything I'm wearing!

I also love quick and easy crochet hats and this one is just that! It took me just one sitting to complete this chunky crochet hat - it's really that quick - just the brim and 9 rows after that!

PLUS there is even a messy bun version if you like those! Find the messy bun version here - if you purchase the PDF, both versions are included!

The messy bun version is actually one of my first patterns on my blog. I've been meaning to get new photos of it on the blog, but when I made a new sample I decided I wanted to close it up and put a pom pom on it! Because although I do wear messy buns a lot, I always like a closed hat option as well.

I actually ended up making a handful of samples with different yarns to see what I liked best. My original messy bun hat was made with Bernat Chunky, which holds up well but isn't the softest in my opinion.

This time around I used Loops and Threads Charisma, Loops and Threads Kaleidoscope, I Love This Chunky! (pictured), and Lion Brand Wool Ease Quick and Thick.

My favorite? The I Love This Chunky! It's not stiff, very flexible and overall I enjoyed working with it and I loved the metallic flecks in it. Loops and Threads Charisma is also very very similar to this yarn so I would say it's a close second.

I would recommend using any of those yarns although Lion Brand Thick and Quick is a bit thicker than the other yarns I used so the last row of the hat was not needed when making the messy bun version.

Thank you so much for your support!

Sharing in any way really helps my blog keep going and the free patterns coming - thank you!

Free Chunky Crochet Beanie Pattern

Materials
1 skein I Love This Chunky! or Loops and Threads Charisma
N/9.00mm hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Faux Fur Pom Pom

Pattern Notes
We will be starting with the brim of the hat and working our way up.

Chain in beginning of rounds do not count as stitch

Abbreviations (US terms):
Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet

Brim of Hat
Ch 9, sc into the second chain from the hook and sc across (8)
Ch 1, turn your work and sc across (8)
Continue doing this until you have 35 rows.
(At this point, you have made the brim of the hat. You can wrap this piece around your head to see if it will fit. I had to stretch it a few inches, but you will want to do this as the hat may stretch over time and plus, it will give you a snug fit. If you find the brim too small, add a few more rows until you find the perfect fit for you.)

Body of Hat
Once you have the brim finished, fold it in half so you can slip stitch the ends together. We will now begin working in arounds on the side of the single crochet rows we just made for the brim.

Row 1: Ch 1, and sc around the brim, join to first sc (1 sc for each row, just try to keep the stitches evenly spaced. Don't worry if you don't think you're doing it perfectly, just go with it. So for this row I had 35 SC around.)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc all around, join to first sc
Row 3: Ch 2, *skip next stitch, dc into next stitch, dc into stitch that was skipped (this makes the double crochets look like an X.) , repeat from * around, join to first dc
(If you made more rows for your brim and have an extra stitch, dc in that last stitch.)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc all around, join to first sc
Row 5: Repeat row 3
Row 6: Ch 1, *1 sc in the next 3 stitches, sc decrease. Repeat from * until you get to the last stitch, sc in last stitch (29)
Row 7: Repeat row 3
Row 8: Ch 1, sc decrease all around, sc in last stitch if necessary (15)
Row 9: Repeat row 3
Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.
Sew up opening by weaving needle in and out of the top stitches.
Pull tight and knot.
Weave in ends.
Attach pom pom.

Chloe Crochet Infinity Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern Download

GET THE CHLOE CROCHET INFINITY SCARF PATTERN IN A FREE DOWNLOAD BELOW.

If you're new here, you may not know it, but I LOVE Caron Cakes! I also love quick crochet projects that keep me cozy during the cold fall and winter months here in PA.

I had a few left over Caron Tea Cakes I bought last year from Michael's, and I knew I wanted to whip up (another) scarf with it! I already have my fair share of chunky infinity scarves, but this time I wanted to make it a bit differently.

You can see all of my crochet scarf patterns here if you're interested in making more! Infinity scarves are so good to sell at craft fairs and for gifts!

I typically make infinity scarves in the round, which is a good way to just make a big loop for an infinity scarf. With this Caron Tea Cake, I wanted to see how it would turn out if I made short rows then connected them into a loop. I was able to use just one skein with some left over!

This infinity scarf is quick and easy to make. Although there are a lot of rows to crochet, the treble stitch plus the super bulky weight of the yarn makes it go be very fast!

When worn, the color blocks go horizontally vs. vertically if made in the round. I really love it! With this color way that incorporates various blue tones, it almost reminds me of water colors.

MORE COZY CROCHET PATTERNS THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD FOR FREE

I find infinity scarves so easy to put on for layering and easy to style. Just wrap it around your neck twice, and it just lays beautifully! Make it in fun colors to dress up a basic outfit or make it in a neutral color to match everything!

Don't forget to give it a heart on Ravelry!

Sharing in any way really helps my blog going and free patterns coming - thank you!

Don't Be A Square Beanie - Free Crochet Hat Pattern

PURCHASE THE AD-FREE PDF CROCHET PATTERN OF THE DON'T BE A SQUARE BEANIE HERE.

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN.

Free Crochet Pattern C2C Beanie

I don't know about you, but I LOVE the corner to corner (C2C) stitch! I've made lots of blankets with this stitch. I find it to be a great mindless stitch as well as easy and quick to work up.

Most of my C2C projects were rather large, but not this one! I thought a beanie would be a nice short project using one of my favorite stitches.

C2c Stitch Crochet

I wasn't sure how it would turn out because I've never seen this stitch used in a small project such as a hat, but I'm happy to say - it turned out fantastic!

Crochet C2C beanie pattern

Coupled with one of my favorite yarns, Caron cakes, this C2C beanie has great texture and pretty diagonal blocks of color in beautiful neutral shades.

Crochet Beanie with Pom Pom

Typically, the C2C stitch is made with double crochets, but for a less "hole-y" look I opted to use half double crochets instead. Same concept, just different stitch!

This beanie also has a slight slouch to it, which makes the pom pom sit just right! I love faux fur pom poms, but you can opt to make a yarn pom pom or leave it as is!

Crochet Beanie Pattern

I have a photo tutorial to aide in the pattern below as well as a video tutorial that shows you how to achieve the corner to corner stitch using half double crochets.

If you are using the video to learn or if you are already familiar with the corner to corner stitch - please refer to the pattern notes as I have condensed the instructions for the main portion of the hat! I just tell you how many rows you need to increase/decrease so you don't have to wade your way through the pattern if you already know the ins and outs of C2C.

I hope you have fun with this beanie! Please share with me either on my Facebook group or Instagram your C2C beanie - I can't wait to see all the color variations!
