Woodland Owl Granny Square - Woodland Afghan Series - Free Crochet Pattern

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CROCHET PATTERN.

Hoot! Hoot!

This little guy is finally making his appearance! I had plans to release this pattern several days earlier, but things don't always go as plan and I thank you for being so patient with me. :)

This owl is super cute and plump! I love his big eyes and the roundness to him! He makes a great addition to the other squares I have already created. If you are only finding out about my Woodland Afghan now, click here to learn more! There you will find all the animals I have designed so far as well as how to work up the granny squares.

I have begun to join my squares, adding them as I go along. I soon will have instructions of how I am constructing this blanket once I get a little further along in the process! I'm a big fan of joining as you go because making square after square gets a bit tedious, and to leave all the joining for the end scares me. But that's just my personal preference!

If you can't wait, I can tell you that I am using a SC join on the back of the squares. If you are familiar with this method, go for it! Or if have a different method you prefer, go for it!

I have FOUR MORE squares to design. That means we are past the half-way mark in terms of animal squares for this blanket. I hope you are all enjoying these critters so far! And I always love seeing your work, you can tag me on instagram @mariasbluecrayon or share with me on my facebook page here!

Worsted weight yarn:
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Taupe, Ecru, White, and Mustard
G hook
E hook
Safety eyes 6mm
Tapestry needle

Amazon Picks

*These safety eyes are definitely the cheapest I have found. At a craft store you can get 10 for about $3, but for a little less than $7 you can get 100 of them! You will need several for this woodland afghan project and can always use them for other projects, especially amigurumi!*

Painted Canyon Messy Bun Hat

This messy bun hat has been a hot item this Winter! I made a chunky version in the earlier months of Winter, and have decided to make another! (You can check out the quick chunky version here.) This messy bun hat is similar to my former messy bun hat in terms of stitches, but this time around I used a worsted weighed yarn in one of my favorite color ways.

This yarn is so pretty and fun, and it does all the work for you! This is the second time I'm using this yarn for my projects - (you can find the cowl I did here).  Hobby Lobby exclusively sells "I Love this Yarn!", which is a fantastic line of yarns that hold a large variety of colors. This color is called "Painted Canyon", hence the well thought of name of this hat. ;) I would compare it to Red Heart, but much softer to work with. Each skein gives you plenty to work with and is about $3.99 at Hobby Lobby stores. (Don't forget that 40% off coupon they always have available on their site!)

Since Spring is quickly approaching, I had to take this pattern off the back burner and share with you all while the air is still crisp! We have been having Spring-like weather here in Central PA, but this hat is not too heavy and because of the stitching, it is very breathable. I find it comes in handy in the brisk morning and evenings.

Quick, before this weather gets too warm - pick up your hook and get started on your own messy bun hat!

Materials:
1 skein "I Love this Yarn!" in Painted Canyon
H hook
Hair tie
*I have seen some hesitation in the crochet community about using hair ties - mostly because it may snap. I have very thin hair so I was not worried about this happening. If you have concerns, it may be a good idea to use two hair ties to double up the strength. However, I have not done this so I can not truly, 100% say how that would work out.*

Special Stitches:
FPDC (Front post double crochet AKA front loop double crochet)
BPDC (Back post double crochet AKA back loop double crochet)
SC increase - 2 SC in one stitch

Pattern notes:

Beginning chains of each round does not count as a stitch

Gauge: 4"x4" in double crochet = 12 stitches x 8 rows

Pattern:
Join your yarn to your hair tie
Row 1: Chain 1, 40 SC around the hair tie, join to first SC (40)
Row 2: Chain 3, *skip stitch, DC, DC in skipped stitch, repeat from * around, join to first DC(40)
Row 3: Chain 1, *increase SC, SC, repeat from * around, join (60)
Row 4: Repeat Row 2 (60)
Row 5: Chain 1, *5 SC, SC increase, repeat from * around, join (70)
Row 6: Repeat Row 2
Row 7: Chain 1, SC around, join
Row 8-13: Repeat rows 6&7
Row 14: Chain 3, DC around, join to first DC
Row 15-17: Chain 3, *FPDC, BPDC, repeat from * around, join

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or leave a comment below!

Don't forget to pin this to your boards to save it for later! :)

Fox Granny Square - Woodland Afghan Series - Free Crochet Pattern

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CROCHET PATTERN.

WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?!

The most beloved fox is here!  I know the fox is a favorite among many, so I didn't want to disappoint! I tweaked this guy a couple of times to get him 'just right'.  If you follow me on instagram and watch my insta-stories (if not - you can follow me here!), you may have seen him pop up a few times with different faces along with my uncertainty about the design.  I felt all my other critter designs so far definitely have some character to them, and I just wasn't getting heart eyes from him. BUT adding some safety eyes and eyebrows made a big difference and had me sold!

I think he's super cute, and that subtle timid look on his face makes him oh so much more adorable. He's definitely a favorite so far in the woodland critter bunch I have designed! I hope this little guy lives up to your foxy standards too. :)

But really, guys.. What does the fox say? They definitely don't say ring-ding-ding or hatee-hatee-ho, but it does make for a catchy song and silly bedtime story. That's right - a bedtime story. I purchased the book at a discounted warehouse store, and it's been a favorite ever since. Of course, we don't read it.. we sing it! And the pictures are totally wild and fun to look at. I even found it on Amazon for you guys. Trust me, your kids, grandkids, or any kids you know will love it if you sing it as obnoxious as we do before bedtime!

Warning: This song WILL get imbedded into your brain, and you WILL catch yourself singing it randomly throughout the day. I can definitely see the song being annoying for just about anyone, but I've learned to embrace my silly and just go along with it for the sake of my son (and more importantly my sanity).

Never heard of the song? Hop onto Youtube, start jammin', let go, get silly, and pick up your crochet hook to start this square!

Safety eyes on Amazon are definitely the cheapest I've found - I have gotten them at craft stores, but you only get 10 in a pack for about $3. You can get 100 pieces for about double that price. Definitely worth it! And you can use them for so many other projects especially amigurumi!

Row 2: Chain 1, 2SC in each stitch around, join (20)
Row 3: Chain 1, *2SC, SC, repeat from *, join (30)

Attach white yarn
Row 1: Chain 1, 4 SC, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, decrease, decrease, turn
Row 3: Chain 1, decrease, fasten off and weave in ends
Attach black yarn to where you attached the white yarn to start, SC around the ear. Fasten off, leave tail for sewing onto square.
Left Ear:
Repeat instructions for right ear, but start 4 spaces to the left of the right ear you just finished. There will be 3 spaces in between the ears.

Muzzle
Count 13 spaces from where you joined and fastened off the head.
Attach white yarn, 6 SC, fasten off and leave tail for sewing onto square.

Nose
Using black yarn, chain 4, join to first chain. Sew onto head.

Eyes
Attach safety eyes and sew on eyebrows with black yarn and tapestry needle above the eyes.

*You will not be able to remove the safety eyes once attached. I suggest putting the eyes on and sewing on the eyebrows to ensure proper placement before securing the backside of the safety eyes.*

Here you will find instructions for the granny square base, as well as the overall layout of the afghan that will tell you what colors and how many squares you will need. Also in the post is a running list of the other Woodland themed squares I have completed - take a gander and let me know what your favorite is so far! :D

Tree Granny Square - Woodland Afghan Series - Free Crochet Pattern

OR SCROLL DOWN FOR THE FREE CROCHET PATTERN AND VIDEO TUTORIAL.

The second granny square to my Woodland Afghan is here - a cute little tree! I decided to incorporate the woodland environment along with the little critters. Before starting this afghan, I searched on Pinterest to see what was out there pertaining to woodland theme. (There's boat loads of woodland themed stuff out there, by the way!) I saw a lot of incorporation of the woodland environment such as pine cones, branches, mountains, etc. I knew I wanted to make that a part of this blanket too, so it will be loud and clear that this blanket says WOODLAND THEME!

I redid this tree a few times. Since it's such a simple design, I didn't want it to fall flat. I thought back to all the stitches I learned and remembered the loop stitch I learned while making cabbage patch doll hats. This was the perfect stitch to give this tree some texture and stand out!

Here's the simple pattern for the tree and if you missed the last granny square (A MOOSE!) - you can check it out here

Painted Canyon Cowl Crochet Pattern

Feast your eyes on these colors! I've been raving all about it on my Instagram stories (follow me here), because the colors are just fantastic! I love love neutrals especially for accessories, but I could not pass this up. Good news is, the yarn does all the work for you to get this gorgeous color pattern! I'm a huge fan of "I Love This Yarn!" (sold exclusively at Hobby Lobby), so I already knew it was a yarn I wanted to work with.

Do you see that subtle texture? So much going on in this cowl, and so super easy to make. I wanted to give it lots of depth, so on top of using a textured stitch and variegated yarn, I also used two strands together to make it chunky. Besides, we all know how fast chunky yarns work up, so that's always a plus!

If you make anything for yourself this Winter, make this because it's the bomb dot com. I was in 30 degree weather to take these photos and I didn't bat an eyelash.. this cowl kept me so warm!

Get to it!

Materials
2 skeins I Love This Yarn! in Painted Canyon (found at Hobby Lobby)
9.0mm/N hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Amazon Picks

Special stitches/techniques
This pattern will be worked in rounds, but we will also be turning our work after each round.

Pattern
Before you start crocheting, make sure the two skeins of yarn start with the same color. I had to trim some off before starting - hold two strands together while working this pattern.

Row 1: Chain 42, Join to first chain careful not to twist
Row 2: Chain 2, *[DC, SC] repeat from *, join to first DC, turn your work
Row 3: Chain 3, *DC (NOT into same space as chain 3), SC, repeat from *, join to first DC, turn your work
Row 4-15: Repeat Row 3
Fasten off

NOTE: After each row, you should end with a SC.

See how easy this is?!

Also, I made this to fit my person, if you would like a wider circumference, simply add to the beginning chain in multiples of 2. Add as many rows as you’d like.

*Don't forget to pin this to your boards*

Moose Granny Square - Woodland Afghan Series - Free Crochet Pattern

OR Scroll down for the free written crochet pattern and video tutorial!

I am compiling granny squares with adorable little woodland animals to create an afghan! This is the first square of the series that I am sharing with you - A MOOSE! This blanket is going to be radiating with cozy vibes, and I can not wait until it's all put together.

It has been a mild Winter so far here in Central Pennsylvania. I am anticipating colder weather in February, so this blanket will be perfect for snuggles, cuddles, and pure coziness! We have yet to have a mentionable amount of snow, so fingers crossed it will come sooner rather than later so I can put this baby to use! I'll be ready for you, snow day!

Feel free to crochet along with me as I post the individual squares. Here you will find how I am making my granny squares and the colors I've used. I am making the squares a bit larger than average to allow it to grow larger quicker with less sewing together ;)

Here's the pattern for the moose applique, which you will simply sew onto the granny square.

Materials
Yarn in brown, taupe, black
G hook
Tapestry Needle
Scissors

Amazon Picks

Special stitches
SC foundation crochet

Head
(worked in rounds)
Row 1: Magic ring, 12 SC in ring, join to first SC

[If you are no sewing the applique onto anything, you can weave in the ends.]

Antlers

We will be working the horns in the 4th and 5th stitches to the right (right horn) and the 4th and 5th stitches to left (left horn) of the space where we joined for the head. Because we are working in the round and from right to left, where we start the left and right horn will be a slightly different. Pay attention to what # stitch you are inserting your hook into.
*I have provided pictures below to help aide you in starting the horns (specifically shown for the left horn)

Right Horn:
Insert your hook into the 5th space to the right of the join and attach taupe color. Chain 1 to secure, insert and pull up a loop into space to the left (4th space to the right of the join). **YO pull through one, YO pull through both loops. (That completes your first SC foundation) Continue to SC foundation crochet until you have 6 SC foundation crochets. Chain 4, treble crochet into SC foundation nearest to chain. Slip stitch into same space. Slip stitch into next two spaces. [Slip stitch, chain 2, DC, Slip stitch] all into next space. Slip stitch until you get back to the head portion. Slip stitch into 4th space to the right of the join on the head portion. Fasten off and leave tail for sewing onto granny square.

Left Horn:

Insert hook into 4th space to the left of the join, attach taupe color. Chain 1 to secure, insert and pull up a loop into the space to the left (5th space to the right of the join). Follow direction from ** for the right horn.

Fasten off

Right ear
Attach choclate brown yarn into two spaces below horn

I have mapped out what I would like my granny square afghan to look like on an app called PixelArt (this app has many other great uses such as graphing a picture for a C2C afghan or tapestry crochet).
The lightest color (Aran) represents the squares I will have my woodland themed granny squares on, creating a checkered pattern. I plan on having 10 or so different designs so I will be making multiples of each one.

Here are the number of squares you need of each color if you would like to follow this pattern as well:
Rouge - 8
Chocolate Brown - 8
Forest Green - 8
Soft Taupe - 8
Aran - 31

That makes 63 squares total. The afghan will be 7 squares wide x 9 squares high, with each square measures roughly 7 inches. Using this pattern of squares, the afghan will be around the size of an average throw: 49" x 63" and that will not count the border if you choose to put one on.

Please feel free to make this afghan as big or as little as you'd like! Get creative! This is only a suggestion of the layout and how I will be making my own afghan. :)

How I Joined my Granny Squares

I added a border consisting of HDCs around (making sure to put 3HDCs in each corner). I did 4 rows of Aran (cream color), 1 row of Forest Green, and 1 row of Chocolate Brown.

I'm so please with how it all came together! I have a knack for not finishing large project, so I'm patting myself on the back for this one. Thank you everyone for being so loving and supportive!
