Farm Blanket Granny Square Joining and Border

Welcome to the last week of the Farm Blanket Crochet Along! It has been so much fun seeing everyone's progress and I can't wait to see all of the finished blankets!

In this last week, we will be joining all the granny squares then adding a border.
Click here to find the main post of the crochet along.

I love to join granny squares by crocheting them together. Personally, I think it's a pretty quick and easy way to get the job done!

Below, you will find the layout of the blanket and a video of exactly how I crochet the squares together. I typically join the squares together vertically, then horizontally. You can do it vice versa, either way works!

Farm Blanket Layout

Use J/6.00mm hook and red yarn to join granny squares.

*If you are not able to view the video above, you may need to disable your ad-blocker momentarily.

Border

Use J/6.00mm hook
Attach cranberry yarn to the corner of the blanket after it is joined.
Ch 2, 5hdc in corner, hdc across, *5hdc in next corner, hdc across, repeat from * around the blanket. Join to first hdc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Please share your finished blankets in my Facebook group! I would love to see them!
Also, if you enjoyed this Farm theme blanket, be sure to check out my other themed blankets!

Farm Blanket Crochet Along - Materials List and Information

In this post, you will find all the information and materials list for the Farm Blanket Crochet Along! I'm so excited you're here and I can't wait to crochet along with you!

I know you may also have some questions about the crochet along, so I'll go through some of the important information. After reading, if you have additional questions, please ask in the Facebook group incase anyone else has the same question - or you can just email me! mariasbluecrayon@gmail.com

So first thing's first, is this Farm Blanket Crochet Along free or paid?

Like all of my other crochet alongs, the Farm Blanket will be a free crochet along! However, you will have the option to buy the compiled version of the blanket once the crochet along starts. That way, you will have everything at your finger tips (and technically finish the blanket as fast as you'd like!)

When will the Crochet Along start?

The Crochet Along for the Farm Blanket will begin Sunday January 27th and run until March 10th for a total of 7 weeks.

Can I substitute the yarn? (see materials list below)

Yes! I used I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby, but I know it is not accessible to everyone so I have a few suggestions as far as yarn substitutions.

I Love This Yarn! is a worsted weight yarn, but I would say it's more on the thicker end as far as worsted weighted yarns go. The yarns I recommend as substituions are Red Heart Super Saver, Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, or Loops and Threads Impeccable (from Michael's).

Can I use DK yarn?

I know many people asked about using DK yarn a few years ago for the Christmas Granny Square Afghan. My suggestion to you is, if you use DK yarn you will either want to make your granny squares larger by one row (which can easily be done) or add a whole other row to the blanket.

What are the dimensions of the blanket?

There will be TWO size options for this blanket. I made a smaller baby/toddler sized blanket for my son but I was mindful that some may want a larger blanket for their sofa.

The baby size option is 35" x 49".

The throw size option is 63" x 49".

Hook sizes: J/6.00mm, H/5.00mm, F/3.75mm, E/3.5mm

Halloween Blanket Crochet Along - Free Pattern

Hello and welcome to the Halloween Blanket Crochet Along! Here in this post, you will find information about the crochet along as well as each week's assignment/pattern for the week!

Read all the information then scroll down to see what you will need to do for each week and for the link to the patterns!

Are you smiling? I'm smiling. I know a lot of you have been waiting a whole two weeks of this crochet along to start!

Okay, so first thing is first.. if you want to purchase the whole pattern straight away, I have the PDF printable/downloadable on Ravelry that you can grab here. (Every sale helps me keep my blog going and my family fed - thank you from the bottom of my heart!)

Next, shall we discuss details?

If you haven't already - find the materials list here and go grab your supplies!

Halloween Blanket Crochet Along Details

  • This crochet along will run from July 7th until September 1st for a total of 9 weeks.
  • I will release each part/assignment for the week on my blog for free every Saturday 12pm (EST).
  • I will announce on Facebook and through my email list when I release each assignment/pattern.
  • Once the crochet along is over, everything will remain on my blog for free.
  • Each week will be accompanied by a video tutorial along with the written pattern.
  • Share your progress in my facebook group Maria's Yarn Friends or tag me on Instagram @mariasbluecrayon, I love seeing all your work - it's the best part of this crochet along! I look forward to seeing all of your creativity!
  • If you have questions, you may post in the Maria's Yarn Friends facebook or email me mariasbluecrayon@gmail.com
  • Yarn substitution suggested (if you don't want to use Red Heart Super Saver) is I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby. Other worsted weight yarns are thinner compared to the Red Heart. (See next bullet point)
  • If you are using a 'thinner' worsted weight yarn as a substitute, you will want to use a smaller hook size (probably an H/5.00mm). This will result in a small square size so to counter the smaller size, add a row to your granny square pattern. This is easily done by repeating the last row of the granny square.

Assignments/Patterns for each week

Click any of the weeks below to find the patterns for that week.
Links will become available each Saturday at 12pm (EST).
If you don't want to wait - purchase the entire pattern here on Ravelry!

Halloween Granny Square Afghan Crochet Along - Materials List

I know you're just as excited as I am! Today, I have the Halloween Granny Square Afghan Materials List up so you can gather your supplies before we start the Crochet Along!

I know you may also have some questions about the crochet along, so I'll go through some information as well. After reading, if you have additional questions, leave a comment below so I can answer them!

So first thing's first, is this Halloween Crochet Along free or paid?

This crochet along for the Halloween Granny Afghan will be free! However, you will have the option to buy the compiled version of the blanket once the crochet along starts. That way, you will have everything at your finger tips (and technically finish the blanket as fast as you'd like!)

When will the Crochet Along start?

The Crochet Along for the Halloween Afghan will start July 7th, when the first part will be released and run through September 1st, when the last part will be released for a total of 9 weeks.

Can I substitute the yarn? (see materials list below)

Yes! I used Red Heart Super Saver because I had certain color shades in mind before I started this project and that brand happened to have the colors that I wanted.

If you want to use something different, I would suggest using a worsted weighted yarn such as I Love This Yarn! or Vanna's Choice. These yarns seem to be as 'fluffy/thick' as the Red Heart Super Saver. Worsted weight yarns seems to vary and if you get a 'thinner' worsted weight yarn, your blanket may end up smaller. (See question below about using thinner yarn).

Can I use DK yarn?

I know many people asked about using DK yarn last year for the Christmas Granny Square Afghan. My suggestion to you is, if you use DK yarn you will either want to make your granny squares larger by one row (which can easily be done) or add a whole other row to the blanket. (If you used DK weight yarn for the Christmas Afghan, please comment below with how it turned out!)

What are the dimensions of the blanket?

This blanket is meant to be a throw sized blanket measuring roughly 55" x 55".

Halloween Granny Afghan Materials List

Red Heart Super Saver in the follow amounts/colors:
4 skeins Grey Heather
1 skein Spring Green
1 skein Black
1 skein White
1 skein Lavender
1 skein Pumpkin
Small amount of yellow and pink worsted weight yarn (for candy corn and cat nose)
J/6.00mm hook
G/4.00mm hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

More Information

This blanket will consist of granny squares and appliques sewn on. If you are a newbie to joining and sewing on appliques, I have videos that will help you along the way!

I will also have video tutorials along with the written patterns for each and every applique (as well as the granny square).

If you'd like to get weekly reminders when each part of the crochet along comes out (I know social media doesn't always do a good job of notifying everyone of new posts) you can sign up for my email list! I also send out an email each time I release a new pattern (you can unsubscribe at any time). Sign up here.

I will be releasing each part every Saturday at 12pm (EST).

Spring Granny Afghan Crochet Along

In this post you will find the weekly instructions/layout for this Spring Afghan crochet along! Find all the information and materials list here.

Because the project consists of the same granny square, I will be releasing the layout in parts weekly! Each week we will be making 10 squares and joining them as you go (or which ever method of joining you prefer!) After 9 weeks, we will have an afghan for spring! (10 squares x 9 weeks = 90 squares!)

You can purchase the ad-free PDF version here.

PDF version includes the complete layout along with a blank layout if you choose to come up with your own layout. *It will not come with join as you go instructions - there will be a video for that!

Important Notes

READ THIS BEFORE YOU START!

There are five different colored flowers for this afghan, and I know not everyone will be using the same colors as I chose so I will be referring to these colors as color A, B, C, D, and E. Make note of what color you are using for each letter so you don't forget!

Following the layout I assigned my yarn colors as follows: A = sunshine, B = lavender, C = sage, D = lavender blue, E = soft pink. (This is just for reference if you want to go by exactly how I made my afghan).

If you are new to using the join as you go method, please watch the video on joining before you complete your squares if you've never used this method before! We will literally join as we go. After making one square, you will start joining the second square before completing (if that's confusing - you'll understand once you watch the instructions!)

Tips

Weave in as you go! (Cliche, I know.) Joining as you go method works smoothly and nicely when you don't have pesky ends to work around. Try to weave in after each join.

When weaving in the tail from the magic ring, make a knot (or two) around a stitch to make it secure. Magic rings are known for coming undone after much use/washing.

If you are using Caron Simply Soft, they have nice center pulls. You can keep the yarn labels on and mark your colors A, B, C, D, E. This will help you when referring to the layout.

If you have questions, consult the Maria's Yarn Friends Facebook group! We have lots of crocheters working on this project, so someone may be able to answer you quicker than I can :) You can also email me if you aren't on social media! mariasbluecrayon@gmail.com

Week 9 Layout

This week we will be finishing off the last row of the blanket!

Please share on Facebook and Instagram, I would love to see your Spring Afghan!

Spring Afghan Crochet Along Materials List & Information

Find all the information you need to know about this free Spring Afghan Crochet Along in this post!

Hello! I'm so excited you are here and (hopefully) interested in this crochet along! I had a crochet along for a Christmas Afghan back in September, and it was a blast! To see everyone's work, creativity, and final projects was so rewarding! Of course, I had to host another crochet along!!

This time around, we will be doing a Spring themed afghan. If you are intimidated by granny squares, don't be! And I promise you won't have to sew all of these granny squares together (unless you want to and that's your preferred method!) For this afghan, I used a join as you go method that I will teach you how to do.

This crochet along will be equipped with written AND video tutorials, plus the best crochet group around (if you ask me)! If you haven't already - hop on over to Maria's Yarn Friends on Facebook to join.

If you aren't a social media person, no sweat! I will be releasing parts of the pattern layout and sending you a heads up via email if you sign up for the email list (I only send subscribers new posts/free crochet patterns!)

Okay, so now on with the details about this crochet along and some questions you may have..

What is a crochet along/CAL?

It's where many crocheters come together to make the same crochet project over a period of time.  The crochet project will be released in parts (in this case, it will be released weekly). Warning: This may cause a lot of inspiration, encouragement, support, and over all - a fun experience!

I have a Facebook group (that is the best around!) full of amazing, supportive yarn lovers where we will share our progress, ask questions, and receive lots of encouragement! You can join here if you haven't already. This isn't mandatory by any means, but it adds to the fun!

How long will this particular CAL last?

This crochet along for the Spring Afghan will start January 14th and run through March 11th (that will be the day the last part of the CAL will be released). That's 9 weeks to complete an afghan - totally doable!

How will this CAL work?

To be honest, this was a bit tricky for me to figure out how I wanted to section this project up. As you can see, all the granny squares are the same except the colors. So to cut it up into digestible parts, I have a layout of how I arranged the colors of the granny squares. Each week I will "reveal" the part we will be working on.

Each week we will be working on one row of granny squares, joining them all together with the join as you go method (or sewing them together if you prefer). We will also tackle those pesky ends after each 'row' so you don't loose your mind at the end of the project. Each week your blanket will grow by one 'row' until you have a completed afghan!

Is this free?

Yes!!! It's all free. It will all be available on my blog and I will announce each week via email and facebook. And yes, it will stay free after it's finished so if you're working on other projects - no big deal! Save it for when you have time.

Totally optional, but as always, there will be a PDF printable version for you to purchase (which helps me immensely to keep my blog up and free crochet patterns coming!) Included in the PDF printable version will be a print out of the entire layout so if you would like to work ahead - you can do that.

ALSO, I know my layout will not be ideal for everyone.. so if you'd like to use more colors than I used for the flowers, I will have a blank layout included in the PDF printable version. That way you can color in how you would like to rearrange your squares and with the colors you would like to use.

What will I need for the project?

For this Spring Afghan, you will need the following materials:

6 skeins Caron Simply Soft in Off-white
1 skein Caron Simply Soft in each of the following colors: Lavender, Sage, Sunshine, Lavender Blue, and Soft Pink
H/5.00 mm hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

If you plan on substituting your yarn, be mindful that Caron Simply Soft is a lighter medium 4 weight and has 315 yards per skein.

The finished dimensions of this project will be 60" x 54". Of course, you can make the afghan any size you desire by adding or eliminating the number of granny squares made.
