Bear Granny Square - Woodland Afghan Series - Free Crochet Pattern

We just had our first snow fall here in Central Pennsylvania this past week! That means we had a snow day and I had lots of time to hunker down and get crackin' on this afghan! I have two new squares to share with you - this woodland bear and a little hedgehog you can check out here.

Along with that, I have done the math to figure out how many squares I will need to make this afghan. It will be a bit larger than an average throw. Click here to check out all the details you need to follow along! I am planning about 10 different woodland critter/themed granny squares, so we're about half way there!

Materials

Worsted weight yarn:

Loops & Threads Impeccable - Chocolate Brown

G/4.00mm hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Amazon Picks

Special Stitches/techniques

This applique will be worked in rows and around. There will be no breaking of yarn although I do try to break up/explain each part that is being made along the way.

Pattern

Row 1: Chain 14

Row 2: HDC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC across (13)

Row 3: Chain 1, HDC across (13)

Row 4: Chain 1, HDC across (13)

That completes the body of the bear and we will start to work on the legs. Do not break yarn.

Back Legs: [Will be worked into the first 3 stitches on the main body]

Row 1: Chain 1, 3 SC, turn over

Row 2-4: Repeat row 1

Row 5: Chain 1, 3 SC, Chain 2, DC in same space as last SC

Do no turn your work, keep working around: slip stitch until you get back to the body (last slip stitch should be in the 3rd stitch on the main body)

Then work the following in stitches 4-8 on the main body:

Sl stitch, 3 SC, slip stitch (this creates the belly of the bear)

Front Leg: [This will be worked into the 9-10 stitch of the main body]

Row 1: 2 SC, Chain 1, turn your work

Row 2-4: Repeat row 1

Row 5: 2 SC, Chain 1, DC in same space as last SC

SC in next space around, then slip stitch until you get back to the body (the last slip stitch will be in the 10th stitch on the main body)

Final Front Leg: (will be worked in stitches 11-13 on the main body)

Row 1: 3 SC, Chain 1 turn work

Row 2: 2 SC, Chain 1, turn work

Row 3-4: Repeat row 2

Row 5: Chain 1, 2 SC, Chain 2, DC same space as last SC

Keep working around

SC in next stitch and slip stitch until there are 4 spaces left on the side of the body

Head/top of body:

Row 1: Chain 1, 4 SC

Row 2-4: Repeat row 1

Row 5: Chain 2, DC, SC, SC, 2 SC in same space

Keep working around to form the top of the head and the top of the body.

(SC, Chain 3, SC) all in next space,

2 sl st ( you should now be back onto the main body) 2 sl st, 3 SC, 5 sl st, SC, HDC, 3 DC in same stitch (last stitch on top of the body - keep working around) DC, HDC, 3 SC, slip stitch until you reach the bottom of the back feet.
