Chunky Crochet Ear Warmer - Free Crochet Pattern

Get the free crochet pattern for these chunky crochet ear warmers by scrolling down!

Two things I love in a crochet project: simple and easy. These crochet ear warmers are just that!

Basic, simple ear warmers that will keep your ears warm and easy to crochet!

I love wearing ear warmers especially on windy days and when I'm out in the chilly weather taking my dogs for a walk.

I love wearing crochet hats too, but I get so warm when out walking my dogs so having the ear warmer is just enough to keep me warm but not too warm!

I have a really basic ear warmer pattern that is very popular, but I needed something extra. For this ear warmer, I used a tighter stitch and a bulky yarn for extra warmth.

Because of the bulky yarn, these crochet ear warmers also work up quickly. I was able to crochet each ear warmer in just one sitting.

If you'd rather use up some of your worsted weighted yarn, you can do that too! The cream colored ear warmer is made with worsted weight yarn doubled up and it turned out perfectly.

For this crochet ear warmer, you can also add the cinch in the front or do without it. I like them both ways so I made the cinch and when I want to change up the look I just wear the cinch part on the back!

Thank you so much for your support! All the support for my crochet blog allows me to stay home with my son to homeschool him and it really means the world to me!

Free Crochet Ear Warmer Pattern

Materials
Bulky or Worsted Weight yarn (holding two strands together)
J/6.00mm hook
Tape Measure
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch markers (optional)

Notes

If using worsted weight yarn, hold two strands together while crocheting.

The ear warmer is made to fit snug so it doesn't slip down while being worn. It can be made to fit any size head by simply crocheting until your rows measure 3" less than the head circumference you are making it for.

At the end of each row, it may be difficult to see the chain 1 from the previous row to crochet into. Use stitch markers to mark each chain 1 in the beginning of the row to make it easier.

Dimensions of finished headband: 4” x 18”

Abbreviations (US terms):
Ch = chain, sc = single crochet, sk = skip, st = stitch(es), sp = space

Pattern

Row 1: Ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next st, repeat from *, turn
Row 2: *Ch 1, sc in next ch 1 sp from previous row, repeat from * across, ch 1, sc in ch 1 from previous row, turn
Repeat Row 2 until the rows measure 18"
Fasten off and leave tail for seaming.

With tapestry needle and yarn, whip stitch the first and last row together. Weave in ends. Turn inside out to hide seam.

Cinch (optional)

Place ear warmer with seam facing you in the middle. Insert tapestry needle with yarn through one stitch closest to you, one through the middle, and one through the stitch farthest from you.

Turn over and pull both yarn ends tightly, making sure front is cinched and knot. Weave in ends.

Faux Knit Ear Warmer - Free Crochet Pattern

Get the free pattern & PDF printable/download for this faux knit ear warmer crochet pattern below!

Happy 2018! I'm so happy to start this year with lots of new design ideas and big goals!

To start off, I'm sharing with you a crochet ear warmer pattern that looks knit! I've been crushing on knitted items lately - the look and the texture! I learned how to knit last year and I fell in love with how stretchy and flexible the stitches are.

This crocheted headband gives you the knit look as well as the stretchy feel to keep your ears extra snug and cozy. I made it a bit wider than previous ear warmers I've made so I don't have to fiddle around much when wearing them.

This ear warmer is pretty darn similar to my Aspen Infinity Scarf. It uses the same stitches and has the same texture to match this.. aaaand I used the left over yarn from that scarf so it's basically a perfect match. If you'd like to make a ear warmer/scarf set, you can find the Aspen Infinity Scarf pattern here for free.

I used Lion Brand's Heartland yarn for this and honestly, it's my favorite acrylic yarn. I tend to get very itchy when wearing wool (especially anything that goes on my head) so I'm super pleased with how soft the Heartland yarn is and the color choices are fantastic!

You will be able to make at least two ear warmers with one skein of the Heartland yarn - make yourself one and make another for your favorite pal! Or donate one to charity!

Also, as a big thank you for such a great and successful start to my blog in 2017, the PDF printable version on Ravelry will be free for everyone to download! Running my crochet blog wouldn't be possible without your likes, comments, shares, pattern purchases, visiting my site, and all around support! Thank you!

Pattern

Materials
Lion Brand Heartland yarn (Grand Canyon)
H/5.00mm hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

The chainless foundation is necessary for maximum stretchiness.

To make the ear warmer larger/smaller, increase/decrease the beginning number of stitches.

Ear warmer will be made in rounds, add more or make less rows to make the ear warmer thicker or skinnier.

Gauge: 4" x 4" ~ 7 st x 6 rows in front post double crochet

Click here to read how to check your gauge and why it may be important.

Round 3-11: Ch 2, fpdc around, join to first dc
Round 12: Ch 1, sc around, join to first sc

Simple Crochet Ear Warmer Free Pattern for Beginners

These quick and easy crochet ear warmers are the best! They're so easy to make (very suitable for a beginner crocheter!) and they are a great stash buster!

I have to start by saying, this is by far the easiest and quickest project I've ever done! So whether you are brand new to crochet or have been in the game for a while, this project will take little time (and yarn!).

I made a bunch of these ear warmers pretty neutral colors. I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice which is a worsted weighted yarn. I like the fluffiness it seems to give and is a true worsted weight yarn that made the headband cozy.

Another yarn I would suggest to use is Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn! They have several colors to choose from and it has the same soft, cozy feel (maybe even softer, to be honest!).

I originally found a pattern for a cinched ear warmer here by Little Monkey's Crochet but have modified to my liking. I will be referring to this talented crocheter when it's time to make the final touches on this ear warmer, which she provides an excellent tutorial of.

All you'll need to know for this simple crochet ear warmer is how to chain and half-double crochet. That's it! We will be working in the round and it's only a total of 8 rows.

These are great stocking stuffers or small gifts. That means you can make a bunch for your family and friends in a weekend!

Or you can sell these ear warmers at craft fairs if you sell your crocheted work! When I use to sell my finished crocheted items, these were always a good seller.

They were my lower priced items at about $10-12 dollars and people always love something simple and easy to wear with anything!

I love having options, so all of those ear warmers are actually mine - ha!

This ear warmer is so customizable if you want to get creative!

Want a more snug fit? Chain less in the starting row.

You can also add more rows or even use a chunky yarn! (If you use a chunky yarn, I suggest using a bigger hook and less chains in the beginning. Simply measure the chain around your head to get the fit you want.)

I bet this would also look great with a variegated or marled yarn!

Add a cute flower or buttons on the side!

See? There's lots of possibilities to dress this little headband up, or just keep it simple!

Chain
HDC (half-double crochet)
(If you are brand spankin' new to this, I suggest any and all videos by Mikey from the Crochet Crowd. Here is a link to the youtube video to learn half-double crochet)

Pattern notes:
If you'd like to make a child size, the two changes you need to make: chain 52 and repeat Row 2 for 7 rows

Pattern

Row 1: Start by chaining 56, careful not to twist the chain, slip stitch into the first chain
Row 2: Begin working in rounds, Ch 1 and HDC around, join to the first HDC
Repeat Row 2 until you have 8 rows (or more if desired, this ear warmer can be tailored to your preference)
Fasten off and leave long tail.

Now that you have the crocheting part of the ear warmer finished, visit Little Monkey's Crochet to learn how to cinch the ear warmer together! It's a fairly simple technique and really brings the ear warmer some charm!
