Skeleton Messy Bun Beanie Crochet Pattern

Are messy bun hats in again this year?! I have no idea, but I know I will be wearing them! They are so super practical for me - I live in messy buns. So to have a hat that I can wear with my messy bun - it's kind of a win win for me.

I wasn't plan on making another messy bun hat seeing as there are so many variations out there and I made two last year (a chunky one and a variegated one) - but when the idea came to me that I wanted a skeleton hat to match my son's I thought, why not make it a messy bun hat?

I made my son the same beanie last year and again this year in a bigger size and shared the pattern in multiple sizes in September. You can check out that pattern here. It's the same hat in black and gray, but without the opening on top.

These are perfect to make in a set - like a "his" and "hers", if you will.  Both are available in multiple sizes so in our case, these are 'mommy and me' hats. My son didn't like the idea of getting photos together with our matching hats, but I promise if he cooperates, I will update with pictures. ;)

Side note: I know there are ladies out there with gorgeous, luscious hair that may need a wider opening for their bun, so there are some notes for the adult sizes to accommodate for that. You'll find those notes right before you start the adult size pattern.

Worsted weight yarn in black, purple, white

H/5.0mm hook

G/4.0mm hook

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Pattern notes

Chain 2 in beginning of rounds do not count as a stitch

Pattern

Toddler size (18” circumference)

Starting with black

Round 1: Chain 24, join to first chain to make a circle

Round 2: Chain 2,  DC in each stitch around, join to first DC (24)

Change to purple

Round 3: Chain 2, *DC, 2DC, repeat from * around, join to first DC (36)

Change to black

Round 4: Chain 2, *DC in next 2 stitches, 2DC, repeat from * around, join to first DC (48)

Change to purple

Round 5: Chain 2, *DC in next 7 stitches, 2DC, repeat from * around, join to first DC (54)

Change to black

Round 6-11: Chain 2, DC in each stitch around, join to first DC

Changing colors for each row to complete the purple-black pattern

Work the remaining rounds in black

Round 12-14: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around, join to first SC

Fasten off and weave in tail

Child size (20” circumference)

Starting with black

 Round 1: Chain 24, join to first chain to make a circle

*If you need a larger hole for your messy bun, start by chaining 36 and joining to make ring. Proceed to Row 2 (you will have 36 stitches around), skip Row 3 and proceed to Row 4. This will give you quite a larger hole for your messy bun. The color changes will be off, but just change your colors every other row to create the stripes. *

Starting with black

Using white and a G hook

Make a magic ring

Round 1: Magic ring, 10 HDC in ring, join to first HDC

Round 2: Chain 2, 2HDC in each stitch around, join to first HDC

Round 3: Chain 2, *2HDC, HDC, repeat from * around, join to first HDC

Round 4: Chain 2, *2HDC, HDC in next 2 stitches, repeat from * around, join to first HDC

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing onto hat

Eyes - black - G hook

Round 1: Magic ring, 10 HDC in ring, join to first HDC

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing

Make 2 eyes

Sew eyes onto circle

Sew on mouth using a tapestry needle and black yarn

Sew applique onto side of hat.
